Assumed migration route of George L. Gee and his wives, Sarah Rash and Mary Taylor.

George L. Gee was born in 1816 in VA. His parentage is unknown at this time. There were lots of Gees in the Lunenburg County, VA area where Robert Rash’s family was from and one needs to investigate the Greensville, VA area where Rebecca Sill’s family was from to determine which Gees in those areas came to TN. It is possible the young George followed his future father-in-law to TN and married Rebecca after they arrived.[1],[2],[3],[4]

George L. Gee married Sarah Jane Rash, daughter of Robert Rash and Rebecca Sills, on 8 DEC 1836 in Williamson County, TN. They were married by Levi Crosley, J. P.[5],[6]

George and Sarah became the parents of James M. Gee on 22 JUN 1837 in TN.[7],[8],[9],[10]

George L. Gee paid taxes in 1838 in Williamson County, TN. He paid taxes on one white poll.

Article I, section 2, of the U.S. Constitution requires that a decennial population census, a nationwide enumeration or count of the population, be taken every 10 years. The 1840 census included a special inquiry regarding pensioners for Revolutionary or military service. This section named persons who were either family heads or members and specified the pensioner’s age, not just a range of ages. George L. Gee was listed as a head of a family on the 1840 census of Williamson County, TN. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household: James M. Gee, a free white male, newborn to 5 years old, Sarah Gee, a free white female age twenty to thirty years old. George wasn’t the only Gee living in Williamson County, in 1840. David W. Gee, Hannah Gee, James S. Gee, Nelson Gee, Willey Gee and Robert F. Gee also called Williamson County their home. How our George is related to these Gee’s in not sure, but he must have been related to them somehow. Our George is not to be confused with the George Gee living in Lincoln County, TN in 1840. That George Gee was a free black man. It’s possible that our George was also related to Claibourne and William O. Gee of Maury County, and Joseph and Joshua Gee of Davidson County.[11] [12]

George L. Gee paid taxes in 1841 in Williamson County, TN.

Robert Rash, father-in-law of George L. Gee died in 1844 in Williamson County, TN.

George and Sarah became the parents of George Will Gee in 1845 in TN.[13]

George and Sarah became the parents of Thomas Albert Gee in 1846 in TN.[14],[15],[16],[17],[18]

George and Sarah became the parents of John Wesley Ghee on 23 MAR 1848 in TN.[19],[20],[21],[22]

The 1850 Federal Population census was the first to record each person’s name, their specific age, and the occupation of those over age 15. It gave their place of birth, and value of any real estate they owned. Enumeration began on 01 Jun 1850. George L. Gee (age 33) was listed as the head of the household on the 1850 Census on 10 OCT 1850 in the 16th Civil District of Williamson County, TN. Residing in the same household was Sarah J. Gee (age 30), James M. Gee (age 7), George W. Gee (age 5), Thomas H. Gee (age 4), John W. Gee (age 6/12). George was a farmer. He states he was born in Virginia.[23]

George L. Gee was the head of household on the 1850 in the 16th Civil District of Williamson County, TN, slave schedules on 10 OCT 1850. He had one male slave age 10. When his father-in-law, Robert Rash died in 1844, he had a four year old slave named George. It’s possible that this male slave is George.

George and Sarah became the parents of Susan Gee in 1852 in TN.[24],[25]

George and Sarah became the parents of Maria or Mariah Gee in 1854 in TN.[26],[27]

George and Sarah became the parents of Elizabeth Gee in 1857 in TN.[28]

The 1860 Federal population census schedules were almost identical to those for 1850, but the 1860 census was the first to inquire about the value of each free person’s personal estate. Enumeration for this census began on 01 Jun 1860. George L. Gee (age 44) was listed as the head of the household on the 1860 Census on 24 AUG 1860 in the 9th Civil District of Davidson County, TN. Residing in the same household was Sarah G. Gee (age 41), James M. Gee (age 17), Thomas A. Gee (age 14), John Gee (age 12), Susan Gee (age 8), Maria Gee (age 6), Elizabeth Gee (age 3). He was a farmer. He owned real estate valued at $0. He owned personal property valued at $100. He states that he was born in Virginia. I have no idea why the Gees moved to Davidson County. I had always thought it was to be closer to her family since she died a few months after the enumeration, none of her family lives close by and her father died in 1844. Wondering now if it’s possible they moved to be closer to his family.[29] [30]

George L. Gee became a widower when his spouse, Sarah Gee died between AUG 1860 and APR 1861.

During the Civil War, George L. Gee did not have any military service records between 1861 and 1865. He would have been around 45 years old when the war began, and newly married to his second wife. He had 7 children at home. Another was born during the term of the war. My guess is that he did not serve during the Civil War.

George L. Gee married Mary A. Taylor on 8 APR 1861 in Davidson County, TN.[31]

George and Mary became the parents of William Gee in 1863 in TN.[32],[33]

George and Mary became the parents of Emma Gee in 1866 in TN.[34],[35]

George and Mary became the parents of Robert Lee Gee in AUG 1866 in TN.[36]

George Gee (age 54) was listed as the head of the household on the 1870 census on 10 AUG 1870 in the 8th Civil District of Rutherford County, TN. The official date for this census was 01 JUN 1870. This was the first schedule to ask if a person’s father or mother were foreign born. Residing in the same household was Mary Gee (age 41), James Gee (age 24), John Gee, Albert Gee (age 23), Susan Gee (age 18), Mariah Gee (age 16), Lizzie Gee (age 15), William Gee (age 7), Emma Gee (age 4), Robert Gee (age 2). George was a farmer. He owned real estate valued at $1000. He owned personal property valued at $500. Everyone on page is listed as born in TN.[37]

George and Mary became the parents of Henry Jackson Ghee on 24 AUG 1870 in Rutherford County, TN.[38],[39],[40]

George and Mary became the parents of Nannie Gee in 1873 in TN.[41],[42],[43]

George and Mary became the parents of Martha Jane Ghee on 10 FEB 1876 in Eagleville, Rutherford County, TN.[44],[45]

George L. Gee died between 1876 and 1880 in TN.

George L. Gee died without leaving a will in Williamson County, TN.[46],[47]
